The Hidden Dangers in Everyday Deodorants

We all love feeling fresh and confident throughout the day, but have you ever really looked at what’s inside most deodorants and antiperspirants? Considering that we apply them daily to delicate, thin skin, right over clusters of lymph nodes, it seems only natural to expect that these products would be completely safe. Yet behind their fresh scents and smooth feel, many supermarket deodorants contain a cocktail of chemicals that may be doing more harm than good.
At Happy Horizons, we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between feeling great today and protecting your long-term health. Let’s take a closer look at some of the common - and concerning - ingredients hiding in conventional deodorants.
1. Aluminium Compounds

Often listed as aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium zirconium, these synthetic compounds work by blocking sweat ducts to reduce perspiration. While that might sound convenient, your body is designed to sweat naturally – a vital process for cooling down, detoxifying, and maintaining healthy skin. Blocking sweat can sometimes lead to overheating, fatigue, or skin irritation.
Why it’s concerning: Aluminium applied daily to underarm skin can accumulate in the body, particularly in lymph nodes and breast tissue. Studies have suggested potential links to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and brittle bones. While research is ongoing and not fully conclusive, many people choose to avoid synthetic aluminium as a precaution.
2. Parabens
Parabens are a group of chemicals used to prevent bacteria from growing in products. There are several to watch out for, such as methylparaben, propylparaben, or butylparaben – basically anything ending in -paraben. E-numbers E214–E219 are also parabens.
Why it’s concerning: Parabens mimic estrogen and act as endocrine disruptors – not something you want in a product you use regularly. They can cause hormonal imbalance, have been linked to fertility issues and increased risk of certain cancers, and may also lead to skin irritation.
3. Triclosan
Triclosan is another antibacterial agent that was once common in deodorants. In recent years, most major brands in New Zealand, the EU, and the US have moved away from using it. It is still legal, however, and some imported deodorants may contain it.
Why it’s concerning: Triclosan can cause thyroid disruption, may trigger skin irritation in some people, and some studies suggest links to certain cancers. One of the main reasons it has been phased out in many countries is that it contributes to antibiotic resistance, encouraging the growth of resistant bacterial strains.
4. Synthetic Fragrances
That “fresh linen” or “ocean breeze” scent? It’s usually a chemical cocktail hidden under the simple label fragrance or parfum.
Why it’s concerning: Fragrance formulations are often trade secrets, so you don’t know exactly what you’re applying to your skin. Synthetic fragrances can contain phthalates, which are linked to hormone disruption and may cause irritation for sensitive skin.
5. Propylene Glycol
Propylene glycol is used to keep deodorants smooth and spreadable, and to help other ingredients, like aluminium salts, absorb more easily into the skin.
Why it’s concerning: This petroleum-derived ingredient can cause skin irritation, especially in sensitive areas like the underarms. There are also concerns about cumulative effects on the liver and kidneys, which process and eliminate it over time
